French Law Updates for September 2007

- Introduction of withdrawal of French state medical care in respect of all those people originating from another country (including the UK), who are residing but not working in France now or in the future, and who are under the official retirement age in their country of origin (65 in the UK).

French Law Updates for August 2007

- Introduction of limited recognition of Trusts in France. Law of Trusts now recognised at French law but quite limited. For instance any Trustee must be a recognised category of institution.

French Law Updates for January 2007

- more freedom permitted within testamentary dispositions, for instance a testator without any children who will survive him or her may now decide not to include his or her parents as beneficiaries. Prior to January 2007 parent would have automatically been reserved heirs entitled to at least a quarter each of their offspring's estate.

- reserved heirs can renouce their rights, albeit this is hedged with such formalities that few are likely to do so. These formalities include the obligation to involve two French Notaires.

- introduction of a new Power, similar to that of a UK Power of Attorney, but not the same as that of a Trustee, to appoint an attorney to administer the affairs of a beneficiary of an estate where there is "good and proper reason"
